NJ ASK

At first I thought that the NJ ASK was going to be scary hard but as it turns out it wasn't. One tip I can give you for the NJ ASK  is use your time wisely. If you have extra time then check over your work. I tried to use my time wisely just like my mom told me to but I guess I didn't go back well enough. At times I would either not have enough time to finish or I would have about 10 minutes left but I forgot the small details that made a big difference. Also never Rush. At some points during the NJ ASK when I didn't have enough time, I rushed through it sometimes making it slightly off topic. Whenever I see the time something just comes over me and I start to rush.
The hardest part for me was the essay about a problem in our planet that is currently taking place and a solution for it. It took me a long time just to plan it. I think other than that part on the second day, the Language Arts Literacy test for both reading and writing was fairly easy. All you need is knowledge, time rationing, and to recheck everything to pass or even better, get an advanced proficient  grade.

Salty Cupcakes

Ria and Mio are adopted children. They spent most of their lives in an orphanage until last year when a couple adopted them. Anna and Romell are their adopted parents. Mother's day was coming up and they wanted to do something nice for thee orphans, something family-like.
"I feel sorry for the children without a family," Ria said. "We were fortunate enough to be adopted but, many others are not."She then sat on the living room couch.
"I agree!" Mio exclaimed."We should make cupcakes for them to show that family is not only the people with the same blood as you but, the people who care for you and love you."
Three hours before they needed to come to the orphanage, they baked the cookies so that they would still be fresh.
"We need to make 6 batches of cupcakes for the 72 children there,"Ria counted.
About 20 minutes before they needed to leave to go to the orphanage they tasted the cupcakes.
"Blechhhhh!" Mio exclaimed in disgust. "What did you put in the batch. It tastes like salt."
"I put the mix from the box and some sugar," Mio answered back confused.
"This is salt. You must have accidentally put it in instead of sugar," Ria yelled.
They rushed to the bakery to buy cupcakes for the orphans instead. They bought six dozen of them on time. Both of the siblings explained to the orphans why the cupcakes were store bought and what happened to theirs.
"It's the thought that counts, right?" a seven year old orphan asked politely.
It touched their hearts forever.

J.K. Rowlings quote

Many people like to take the faster, easier way at things. As J.K Rowling said, "We must all face the choice between what is right and what is easy." People keep on wishing to get things faster, they love to use shortcuts. A shorter way isn't always better. Sometimes when you take your time, the work pays off.
I, as a procrastinator, know that taking the shorter way is like waiting to do something a day before it is due. Choosing to do the assignments earlier would have paid off more. For example, sometimes I just plan out what ,to do on a project and then do it at last minute. I take the easy way, the wrong way.
Another example of a person who applies to this quote is my mom. She had to make a decision  of leaving me behind in the Philippines. She made the right choice of leaving me and not the easy choice of staying with me and her not so well paying job. Now she is very successful in life because she made the right choice.
As you can see, in many situations in life you might need to choose the hard decisions to be successful. The easy way is rarely the right or better way to do things.

Summer Break :)

The last day of school, students are always excited for their break. Two and half months are all they get for their break after ten months of school. Is that fair? I think not. Many people believe that if the students had more time for break, that the students would get time to study, be free, and even change.
First of all, more time for summer, more time to free study. The students/children will have time to get ahead of the lessons. Opponents argue that the children might just spend their time playing and having too much fun to even study. Although, they might even pick up a book or two, even if by force of the parents it would still count as learning.
In addition, during the long break that the students look forward to, they can be free from the teachers, the homework, the PRESSURE.  They can have time to be kids at all times. Play, eat, read, and sleep can be their only routine if they wanted to. Opposing parents might argue that too much freedom can result in laziness and one day the students might not even care about their surroundings although, many students are responsible enough to know what is an appropriate for their freedom and the limit of their basic foolishness.
Lastly, children can change during a long period of time no matter what age they are. They can be better, more caring people during the time summer gives them. Opponents might argue that people can change both ways, good and bad. Children are children  and faith decides the way that they change, and faith usually chooses good.
It is evident that a longer summer break can give someone a chance to study, be free and change.

Dear Superintendent O’Malley,
“Experience  should teach us to be most on our guard to protect liberty when government’s purposes are beneficent. The greatest dangers to liberty lurk in insidious encroachment by men of zeal- well meaning, but without understanding,” is one of the many famous quotes said by the late Chief Justice Brandeis. This quote explains that uniforms which would be a new experience for student and that it is very beneficial to take a risk once and a while to see what the effect is. On the other hand, when parents buy uniforms, they still need to buy religious clothes and various clothes for other purposes. Uniforms should be required to be worn in school for all grades and ages. In most cases, uniforms can help prevent or decrease bullying, helps students focus and helps identify people by their status in side the school such as students, teachers, and outsiders.
Clothes are one of the reasons why people bully others. When a bully spots someone who is wearing something that they do not approve of, they will start to bully that person. When wearing uniforms, everybody will have to wear the same thing, even the bullies. If, they make fun of someone about clothing choice, they will be offending themselves too. Sometimes bullying gets out of hand although, with uniforms bullies have one less thing to bully you about.
Teenagers are very insecure about the way they look because of the opinions the people around them give. With uniforms you wouldn’t have to stress about the way you look or the way people look at you. It is a proven fact that uniforms help raise grades by two letter grades when students are focused. Learning should be something that is focused upon and not bothered about later on.
Lastly, uniforms help students identify students who they are. Other than students, uniforms will also tell you who the staff and the outsiders are. People who do now wear a uniform will stand out and easily be located. The more safe the students are, the more they can focus. Even though students can not express yourself enough when wearing a uniform, it’s the inside of the person that counts. Uniforms can make the students feel safer because, they can identify their classmates and stay away from the right people.
School uniforms are mandatory in order for students to do better in school. Hopefully, bullying will prevented,           students will focus on
schoolwork, and that people could be identified in school when wearing

uniforms.
Sincerely,
          Angel Calisay

Coca-Cola

Coca-Cola, meet your perfect match! This beverage is the most known soda of our generation next to Sprite, Mountain Dew, and Pepsi. This perfect, energizing drink was first manufactured in the year of 1944. Life changed since then although the amazing taste of Coca-Cola has not changed since then. If, this drink had never been made we would never know the thrill of tasting energy as a drink, bottled or canned. This beverage has a very energizing taste, is world known and now includes fluoride.
Coca-Cola is your perfect match. This beverage now comes in seven new flavors; cherry, lemon, lime, raspberry, vanilla, Coca-cola sweetened with Splenda, and orange. A great taste in a drink with only 90 calories. They now put organic fruits in Coca-Cola for a healthier drink.
Coca-Cola is proven to be the number one soda not just here in the USA but, also in other parts of the world such as Asia and Canada.  Around 1.3 billion people drink Coca-Cola per day. Imagine that, about 39 billion people per month. It is a known fact that the billions of dollars Coca-cola spends on advertisement is the reason why it is so known around the world.
By buying Coca-Cola you will not only help yourself by buying this soda but, you will also help poor children all around the world through the power of a charity called UNICEF. Our company will donate half of it’s daily profits to UNICEF. Children all around the world will get supplies such as clothes, food, and books from the money you raise from buying Coca-Cola.
Fluoride is now included in Coca-cola. You might think that fluoride is the element in Coca-Cola that stains your teeth, although this statement is actually false. Research shows that fluoride actually helps prevent cavities and it strengthens teeth enamel. The best part is that you can not see, taste or even smell fluoride so it will be like getting a dental treatment without even knowing it. As you can see, Coca-Cola is a very healthy yet popular drink that is great for everyone from children to grandparents.
Coca-Cola is the perfect commercial for you to air on you channel. Here at the Coca-Cola company we strive at targeting both young and old people through the power of our commercials. We have already captured an audience of millions even billions of people with our commercials so, if you air them on your channel I know that we can both capture more audience than we both presently have. Please air our commercial because I believe that our best commercial deserves to be aired on the best channel.

Reflecting Thinking Spots

This commercial was so much fun to make! Our commercial as very funny, creative, and appealing to the audience. I learned during the creative process that I am great at improvising and mixing emotions. Some things  I could improve on are making my voice louder or at least loud enough and trying to relax instead of being so stiff during the commercial. Using writing techniques such as statistics and using anecdotes would be something that I should do in the future. My favorite part of making the commercial is that part when we said, "Pop,sip, ahhh." I loved that part because it had a resemblance to the famous Kit-Kat commercial. Next time I come across a project like this I would make sure I am poised enough and well groomed. I learned from this that practice makes something close to perfect.

Why TV should air our commercial.

Hello! I believe that our company, Coca-Cola is worthy enough to have a commercial air on your TV station. Coca-cola is a highly respected and highly profitable brand that would sell more than ten times more on a daily average if broadcasted properly. We trust your TV station the most to do so. Both of our companies will profit a fair amount of money from this advertisement/commercial. I am sure that the celebrity endorsement and six flags coupon would help us both. I win, you win, we all win. Now is it a done deal? If not, I could also go on and on about the many benefits of our two companies working together to sell, sell, and sell this product.
I would appreciate it if your station could somehow fill me in on the 7:30 commercial slot. Most people watch around that time, so many viewers can see the commercial all at once. I hope that you consider on taking e up on this magnificent offer.

Sincerely,
Angel Calisay

Coke Coca Cola Opposing Soldiers Super Bowl XLV Commercial 2011

My fave. commercial

My favorite commercial is the coca-cola border crossing commercial. I thought it was really funny because, the guards weren't allowed to cross the border/line. Once, a paper crossed from  one of the guards boarders but the other guard gave it back using his sword. Later on in the commercial one of the two guards was drinking coke, the other one looked. The guard that was drinking coke made a bigger border line for the other side and placed a coke on the opposite border so they could both drink. It was so funny when the guards erased the line. I first saw this commercial on the third quarter of the 2011 Super Bowl and instantly fell in love with it.

Career Unit

This past month or so, our class has been learning about the career unit. We basically planned out our educational life from this point in time up until our job interview.
One thing that we learned to do was to make a resume. A resume is what you pass in to a company when you go on an interview so that they may see your previous record, both educational and some social information is included as well. A resume consists of contact information, your objective, you educational background, you work experience, achievements, and references.
Filling out a college application is another one of the many things we did in this unit. This was used as an entry form to the college of your choice. It is almost like a resume for applying into college except this form was even more detailed.
One of the other things that we learned about is preparing, going, and what to do after an interview. This would really help me when I go on an actual interview because I would have already had a previous experience. Going on a real interview is a big deal for everyone and being prepared s the first step to getting the job, so this pre-run of the actual day 12 years from now taught me things that I would not bother learning on my own time.
This unit was very entertaining for me to learn about and the facts were very useful. One day when I'm ready to take on a job I can proudly say that I learned form the best about how to get the interview perfect.

My Mom

(Rutgers University)
The biggest influence and inspiration in my life is my family. They’re the people that support you in all of the decisions that you make in your life. They love you no matter what. Out of everyone I know, the most influential person I know is my mom.
She is braver than a thousand soldiers, in my perspective. She has reached more than she would have ever expected 19 years ago when she graduated. All she was before was a newly graduated Filipino nurse, then her life suddenly got complicated.
During the beginning of the year 2003, my mom had to go under a kidney surgery for total kidney failure. My uncle was generous enough to donate his healthier kidney, risking his life for his sister’s. My mom’s life became super complicated after that. In 2005 while she was living in Alabama by herself, she had another life changing experience. Her left hip bone weakened because of her kidney medicines, so she underwent in yet another surgery to get that bone replaced by a metal. That’s not the last of her health “issues.”Four years after, her uterus got infected and needed yet another operation. My mom faces more challenges than “average” people. She may struggle through various situations in her life but, she can still face them all.
I was four at the time when my mom’s life started to become more complicated and now I am seventeen and ready to conquer the fear that one day there’s going to be bigger challenges like this for my mom and myself. I have decided to take a course in nursing so that I may help her with her “conditions” and everyone else’s in the world. I believe that Rutgers University will give me the proper education to earn my place as a highly respected nurse.

Technology

Technology is found almost anywhere we go and is used in our everyday lives. Everybody uses kinds of technology everyday and everywhere. Almost everything even our essay and homework are done on the computer. Technology can do wonders to us. When were typing it corrects us, when we need answers it gives it to us. We barely need to do anything at all except type in a few words and it gives us everything we need. We won't learn anything when technology is all we use in our lives. None of us would have time to do important things if  all we do is try to catch up with the latest gossip online.
There are many shortcuts that you can use on a computer such as copy and pasting words into their own work to cut down on time, it is also known as plagiarism. People get a higher grade than they should because of the words of other people, (at least when they don't get caught doing it.)
The web can make peoples social and educational lives way smaller. We have a big world that people can go out and explore but the internet is preventing us from that. Expand your mind and your world by cutting back on your technology uses and live life, get the grades you deserve, and have fun.

Welcome Miss Caroll !!!

Welcome Ms. Caroll to our sixth grade class. I hope that you enjoy your stay here at Herbert Hoover. My name is Angel. I am usually the one talking in class. (sorry) I just love to communicate with people to see what their point of view is about certain things, and to hear interesting stories about their lives. Ever since I was a baby I have always been very curious about everything, so I might ask way too many questions. Anyway, I am also a very outgoing person. A while back, I took art, creative writing, tennis, piano, (but I quit that class,) swimming, soccer, and many, many more. So far middle school isn't as bad as I imagined it would be. I thought that maybe I would be stuck with homework up until 2 am, getting pushed and pulled in the hallway, and I even thought that no one from my James Monroe would remember me. I have no idea why I was thinking about the worst case scenario. None of these things has come true yet. Looks like I was worried for nothing at all.
The best part about being in an English class is that you can write whatever you want. There are mostly no wrong or right answers. Although it does bother me that most of the times Mrs.Patalano changes our essays or creative writing pieces. Once she's done with them, most of us can't even recognize the words that she didn't correct.
I am really horrible at typing really fast. So far, I'm up to 20 words per minute according to typing test. Even if I am bad at certain things, I am really great at entertaining people. I can carry any kind of conversation you might bring up. I am also very well adaptable.
A typical day in out classroom starts with a do now, then we go directly on to the daily lesson. Every Friday, we take a grammar quiz based on words of the day, structures of sentences and many other lessons.  Also, whenever we do an oral presentation Mrs.Patalano videos us and  lets us watch it if we have extra time on Fridays after the quiz. I really love it when she reads to us. It makes us all feel very childish (in a good way.) The feel of being childish in class make me feel like it's back to the first day of school when everyone took it easy on us. The thing that I personally hate the most is our monthly typing test. I don't like it because it's very hard to get a good grade. The way you type won't affect your life anyway. Another reason why I don't like it is because I usually get bad grades on that so I tend to practice every now and then to get better.
Finally our class is mildly anxious in the morning. Just the thought of the end of the school day can make us all get crazy. I'm sure that we are all looking forward to spending 2 months with you Ms.Caroll. Welcome and have a great time.

My Carrer Goals !

It's amazing how one decision can affect the rest of your life after college. The earlier in life that you decide your future, the more prepared you will be for the obstacles that will try to keep you from reaching your goal. Everybody says that I should be a lawyer or a speech therapist but, all i want is to be a nurse practitioner. I was going to become a plain registered nurse until, my mom kept talking about other positions that she thought I might be interested in. Since I have always been very good with taking care of people mostly family and toddlers, I was considering a career that would let me take care of people, and nurses have that opportunity. Nurse practitioners are just like doctors. They give prescriptions and medicines, they are almost like doctors except it doesn't take as long to study than actual doctors. I wish that one day I will achieve my goal so that I can help and give back to the world in a way that I would enjoy.

new years resolution

It’s a new year so, it should also be a new me. A resolution that I have for 2011 is to have more online communication with my family back in The Philippines. Three months ago my dad and I would video chat every other day but now we haven’t chatted in two months. The more I remember how close we were the more I miss talking to him. To spend more time communicating with him, I will send emails, pictures, and I will try to video chat with him as much as possible. I hope that one day, we will still be as close as we were before, even with a computer screen and an ocean between us.
